Fairhope Municipal Pier

The Fairhope Pier in Fairhope, Alabama, is a well-loved spot with fantastic views of Mobile Bay, great fishing, dining options, and useful facilities.

The pier stretches 1,448 feet into Mobile Bar and offers amazing panoramic views of Mobile Bay.

You can find it at the west end of Fairhope Avenue, where an old commercial pier stood back in 1894. After Hurricane Katrina damaged it, the pier was rebuilt and opened up again in 2006.

Here are some cool things about it:

- They have a famous fountain, duck pond, and beautiful rose garden.

- You can dock your boat and get fuel at the marina just down from the pier

- The Blind Tiger restaurant will be opening on the pier hopefully soon.

- There are benches, covered spots to sit, and restrooms for everyone.

- If you're into fishing, there's a special area, but you'll need a saltwater license if you're under 65.

- Bird lovers can spot some cool birds along the Alabama Coastal Birding Trail. Check out the Purple Martin birdhouses.

Just so you know, dogs are not allowed on the pier, but they're welcome on leashes in the nearby North Beach Park trails.

Cannon Fire at The Grand Hotel Resort

Cannon Fire at The Grand Hotel Resort is a daily tradition that pays homage to the history and heritage of this remarkable resort in Fairhope, Alabama. Situated on the grounds of a former Civil War-era military hospital, it's a place with deep historical significance. The cannon fire serves as a tribute to the brave soldiers who once stood here.

Every day at 3:45 p.m., this captivating ceremony unfolds at Cannon Park, offering stunning views of Mobile Bay.

The event kicks off with a procession that starts at the lobby fireplace and winds its way to the park. There, a staff member dressed in a Confederate uniform fires a Civil War replica cannon. The whole experience is set to patriotic music and accompanied by a narrated explanation of its importance.

While the cannon fire is open to the public and free of charge, it's particularly cherished by the registered hotel guests and Lakewood Members.

They can join the procession and witness the spectacle up close. This tradition is part of the resort's Grandeur, Grit, and Glory program, which celebrates the unique history and culture of Fairhope and The Grand Hotel in a truly memorable way.

Tolstoy Park/Henry Stuart House

Tolstoy Park, or the Henry Stuart House, is a unique and historic home in Fairhope, Alabama. Built by Henry Stuart in the 1920s, it's a special place with an interesting story.

The house is quite distinctive—it's a round, domed structure made of concrete blocks that Stuart made by hand. It's about 14 feet across and partly underground. There used to be six windows and two skylights, but they're closed now.

Stuart lived a simple life in his little house. He grew his own food, made rugs, and welcomed visitors. One of his famous guests was Clarence Darrow, a well-known lawyer.

Henry Stuart built the house after moving from Idaho to Alabama in hopes of the good weather helping his tuberculosis.

Stuart lived in his special house until 1944, when he sold the property and moved to Oregon to be with his son. He passed away in 1946 at the age of 88.

But his unique house lives on. It's now a historic place listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 2006.

It's surrounded by a parking lot for an office complex, but it still tells the story of Stuart's spirit and vision. It even inspired a novel called "The Poet of Tolstoy Park" by Sonny Brewer.

You can drive up to the house and get a good look at it from the car.

Historic Fairhope Clock

The clock was set up in 1987 by the Fairhope Single Tax Corporation, a community group that looks after a lot of the land in Fairhope. It's modeled after an old-timey street clock from the 19th century, made by the E. Howard Clock Company in Boston.

Fairhope Castle

Fairhope Castle consists of three imaginative homes in Fairhope, Alabama, privately owned by the Mosher family. The first, Sheldon's Castle, was created by renowned artist Craig Sheldon, who moved to Fairhope in 1954.

He used recycled materials and his artistic vision to build an enchanting home, along with a studio and gallery for his sculptures and paintings. It is now owned by his daughter, Pagan Mosher, and her husband, Dean Mosher, both artists.

The second, Mosher Castle, was inspired by Dean Mosher, who admired his father-in-law's creativity. He began constructing it in 1989, using salvaged stone, wood, metal, and other materials, adding whimsical elements like turrets, stained glass windows, gargoyles, and a drawbridge. The castle also features paintings and sculptures by Dean Mosher and other artists.

The third, Boom Castle, is the creation of Dean Mosher's son, Dylan Mosher, who started building it in 2010, incorporating recycled materials and elements of steampunk and fantasy, like gears, clocks, and a rocket ship.

Sheldon Castle now features an AirBnB studio apartment where guests can enjoy the magic in person. Tours for groups and professional photo shoots can be arranged by appointment. The Fairhope StoryBook Castles, however, are private homes and Fairhope Treasures.

These castles reflect the artistic and creative spirit of Fairhope, a city that celebrates art and community.

Weeks Bay Reserve

Weeks Bay Reserve is a coastal haven dedicated to the preservation and exploration of the estuarine system of Weeks Bay, where freshwater from the Fish and Magnolia Rivers converges before flowing into Mobile Bay.

Part of the National Estuarine Research Reserve System, this 6,000-acre sanctuary nurtures a diverse range of ecosystems and wildlife, including endangered species like the eastern indigo snake and the Alabama red-bellied turtle.

It serves as an educational, recreational, and scientific hub, offering a visitor-friendly Interpretive Center with exhibits and live animals, nature trails and boardwalks for scenic observations, kayaking and canoeing opportunities, educational programs, and scientific research projects.

Visitors can learn about the wetlands, native plate life, and pitcher plants within the park.

Open Monday through Saturday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, this reserve provides free admission, with donations warmly welcomed, and offers a wealth of insights into the intricate world of estuarine environments.

Fairhope Tea Plantation

Fairhope Tea Plantation boasts a rich 40-year history, making it one of the United States' oldest and largest tea farms with over 61,000 tea bushes of various varieties.

The journey began when founder Donnie Barrett salvaged three tea plants from an abandoned Lipton experiment's burnt pile in 1979. Drawing upon his expertise in camellia cultivation and forestry, Barrett nurtured and propagated these tea plants on his own land.

Through dedicated experimentation, he honed his skills in tea production and horticulture, mastering the craft of creating various tea types, including green, black, oolong, and white.

Fairhope Tea Plantation is a fully operational farm open to visitors by appointment, reachable at (251) 928-0919 for scheduling.

Gator Alley Boardwalk

Located in Daphne near where Interstate 10 and Highway 98 cross. There is a boardwalk near this intersection where you can see alligators along the Eastern Shore Trail.

The boardwalk passes under the road, offering views of the gators when they are present.
