If you ask just about anyone on Sanibel Island where to eat breakfast, the Sanibel Cafe comes up almost every time. It has been on Periwinkle Way since 1984. The Sanibel Cafe is a casual breakfast and lunch restaurant you don't want to miss.

Sanibel Cafe
This place has a real history. It first opened in 1978 as the Pancake and Omelette House, a diner-style spot that locals took to immediately. In 1984 it became the Sanibel Cafe, and in 2006 Ken Loewit and Richard McCurry took over and have been running it ever since.
What you walk into today is a casual, comfortable breakfast and lunch spot that does not take itself too seriously but takes its food seriously. The menu is classic American with some genuine island personality mixed in, the staff knows what they're doing, and the whole place has the kind of lived-in comfort you can't manufacture.
The Sanibel Cafe is open 7 AM to 2 PM daily, breakfast and lunch only, and they do not take reservations. Arrive early or expect a wait, especially during peak season. It is worth it.

Indoor Seating
I would go back day after day just to sit at the Sanibel Cafe shell filled tables. The fossilized shells are amazing and there is so much to look at. I have to admit seeing a Junonia sitting in the table felt like a good luck charm for shelling in Sanibel.

Sanibel Cafe Menu
The menu covers breakfast and lunch, served all day from 7 AM to 2 PM. Everything is straightforward, well-priced, and made to order.
Breakfast Highlights
The breakfast menu has something for everyone. A few things worth knowing about before you order:

Omelets are a strong suit here. The Sanibel Omelet with sauteed shrimp, herbs, onions, and Havarti cheese is the one to get if you want something that feels like the island. The Philly Cheesesteak omelet with shaved beef, peppers, onions, mushrooms, and Havarti is another solid pick.
All omelets come with hash browns and your choice of white, wheat, or rye toast. Grilled parmesan tomatoes can be substituted for hash browns if that's your preference.
Island Favorites is its own section of the menu and it delivers. The Original Islander is sauteed alligator with two eggs, hash browns, and toast, which is exactly the kind of thing you order on vacation. Fish and Eggs with grilled Swai is another good option if you want something a little lighter than a full dinner plate.
Benedicts come two poached eggs on a toasted English muffin with hollandaise and paprika, served with hash browns. You can get them topped with Canadian bacon, lox and capers, a house-made crab cake and tomato, sausage gravy, or a plain sausage patty.
Pancakes, Waffles, and French Toast are all topped with cinnamon and powdered sugar. The Pina Colada French Toast with sweet coconut and pineapple orange sauce is the standout. The Campfire S'mores pancakes with roasted marshmallows and chocolate chips are popular with kids and honestly with adults too.
Cakes and waffles can be ordered with a topper from a list that includes strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, bananas, coconut, pineapple, pecans, almonds, chocolate chips, and M&Ms.
Mimosas are $10.

Lunch Highlights
Lunch runs the same hours as breakfast, 7 AM to 2 PM, so you can order off both menus at the same time if you want.
The Rusty Pelican is the house specialty and a very good sandwich. Sliced turkey, Havarti cheese, bacon slaw, and raspberry jam on a butter croissant. It sounds like an odd combination and it works completely.
The Cafe Crab Burger is a house-made crab cake on a kaiser with lettuce, tomato, and onion.
The Bang Bang Shrimp wrap or sub roll is another easy yes.
Salads include a Summer Mix with lettuce, strawberries, apples, candied walnuts, mandarin oranges, and blue cheese crumbles that is genuinely good. The Cafe Original salads made with shrimp, chicken and grape, or tuna are house-made.
Burgers and Quesadillas round out the menu along with a full list of wraps and croissandwiches. The South of the Border burger with house-made salsa, jalapeno, and cheddar is a good pick if you want something with a little kick.
Kids Menu
Kids 10 and under can order from the kids menu. Breakfast options include one egg with hash browns and toast, two pancakes or French toast, and M&M pancakes. Lunch options include grilled cheese, chicken fingers, a plain cheeseburger, and mac and cheese. All kids' lunch plates come with French fries.

Souvenirs
The Sanibel Cafe sells house-made jams, their own coffee mug, t-shirts, and an Island Artist Dave Hoggatt coffee mug. The jams are worth picking up.
I honestly regret not buying one of their t-shirts while we were on Sanibel. I keep telling my husband, John, that we should drive back for a great breakfast, and so I can get a Sanibel Cafe t-shirt or two.
