    World's Smallest Police Station Carrabelle

Published: Aug 8, 2026 by Tammilee · This post may contain affiliate links

Did you know the world's smallest police station is a repurposed phone booth in Carrabelle, Florida? This roadside stop on US 98 has a story that goes back to 1963, and it's been on Johnny Carson's "Tonight Show," Ripley's Believe It or Not, and more.

The World's Smallest Police Station started out as an ordinary phone booth. In 1953 the phone company installed a call box for Carrabelle's small police force so officers could answer calls while walking the beat, but the box kept getting vandalized and people kept sneaking unauthorized long-distance calls on it.

In 1963, local phone company employee Johnnie Mirabella solved both problems at once: when his company retired an old phone booth in town, he had it moved to a shady spot on US 98 and turned it into a booth-sized police station, complete with hand-lettered signage.

It worked so well the two-man force could park the patrol car in the shade, do paperwork, and watch for speeders all from inside the booth. The dial was eventually removed from the phone to stop the long-distance calls for good.

The original booth has been vandalized and replaced more than once over the decades; today's roadside booth is a replica, and the original is preserved on display at the Chamber Office across the street.

It is worth stopping along US 98 as you drive through Carrabelle for a fun photo and to check out the history of the police phone booth.
