The National Maritime Museum of the Gulf in Mobile, Alabama, offers visitors an immersive journey through maritime history with 80 hands-on exhibits spread across 8 themed decks. Housed in a distinctive 90,000-square-foot building shaped like a ship entering Mobile Bay, this unique museum is the only one in the world dedicated entirely to the Gulf of Mexico's history, ecology, and cultural significance.

The Maritime Museum of the Gulf is filled with interactive displays that everyone will enjoy. We found ourselves wandering the different levels in awe as we learned more about shipbuilding, global trade, maritime history, and so much more as it relates to the Gulf.

Living next to the Gulf we see the big ships when we are out and about but didn't know a lot of the rich history that has occurred around the Gulf Coast.

The museum's exhibits are set up on different levels of a 90,000 square foot ship shaped liked it is entering Mobile Bay.

Over the past few years the museum has undergone a couple of name changes from GulfQuest to the National Maritime Museum of the Gulf of Mexico before removing "of Mexico".

The National Maritime Museum of the Gulf is the only museum in the world dedicated to the history, folklore, and culture of the largest gulf on Earth.

Deck 1 - Navigation & Ship Design Fundamentals

Deck 1 at the National Maritime Museum of the Gulf is where you'll get hands-on with how ships actually navigate the Gulf of Mexico. This deck features 15 interactive exhibits that let you try everything from old-school navigation tools like cross staffs and sextants to modern GPS technology.

You can take bearings, chart your own course, and even tackle the Longitude Challenge that stumped sailors for centuries. The Night Skies exhibit shows how sailors used stars to find their way, which we found fascinating!

The propulsion exhibits are really cool too. You'll learn how ships moved from "setting sail" with wind power to "full steam ahead" with engines, and you can experiment with how propellers work.

Deck 2 - Gulf History & Kids' Play Area

Deck 2 of the National Maritime Museum of the Gulf is where your youngest mariners can really let their imaginations run wild! This deck features the Junior Mariners area, a dedicated space designed specifically for kids to dress up and play on the high seas.

If you're visiting with toddlers or elementary-aged kids, definitely plan some extra time on this deck; it's the perfect spot to let them burn off energy while still learning about Gulf maritime history!

Deck 2A - Maritime Economy & Container Ships

Here's something we didn't know before visiting the National Maritime Museum of the Gulf: modern containerization was actually invented right here in the Port of Mobile!

Deck 2A dives into how this innovation revolutionized global trade and why the Gulf of Mexico plays such a crucial role in the world economy.

The "What's Inside" exhibit shows you what's actually in those massive container ships you see in Mobile Bay, while "Comings and Goings" tracks the constant flow of maritime traffic through the Gulf.

If you've ever wondered what all those big ships are carrying when you see them around the Gulf Coast, this deck answers all your questions!

Deck 3 - Chronological Gulf History Experience

Deck 3 at the National Maritime Museum of the Gulf is where history really comes alive!

The entire floor features a massive simulated ship hull that you actually walk through, filled with interactive stories chronicling centuries of Gulf maritime history.

Inside the hull, you'll discover fascinating stories like El Cazador (a Spanish shipwreck with an incredible tale), explore the Shipwrecks of the Gulf, and learn about The Hunley submarine. The Portholes to the Sea exhibits give you glimpses into different eras of Gulf history, while Pelican Girls tells the story of women's contributions to maritime life.

Deck 3A - Gulf Ecology & Marine Life

Deck 3A at the Maritime Museum of the Gulf is where you'll discover the incredible ecosystem thriving in and around the Gulf.

The exhibits here are fascinating. You'll explore Oyster Cove to learn about these essential filter feeders, step onto the helm of a ship in the Crows Nest, and feel what it's like to pilot a ship in 35 MPH Winds, and discover the E.O. Wilson exhibit honoring the legendary Alabama biologist.

Keep an eye out for two exciting additions coming soon! The Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo exhibit opens in June 2026, celebrating this iconic Gulf Coast tradition. Then in Spring 2027, the Delta Mosaic exhibit will showcase the complex river delta ecosystem.

Deck 4 - Offshore Platforms & Naval History

Deck 4 focuses on two major aspects of Gulf maritime history that have shaped the region.

The Offshore Platforms exhibit explores the oil and gas industry's massive presence in the Gulf. You'll learn how these platforms are built, operated, and how they've transformed the Gulf over the decades.

The Combat to Commerce exhibit traces the Gulf's transition from a strategic military zone to a thriving center of international trade. We found it really interesting to see how the Gulf's role has evolved from naval battles and coastal defense to becoming one of the world's busiest shipping corridors.

Deck 5 - Ship Simulator & Port Views

Are you ready to take the helm in the professional ship simulator? Deck 5 is home to one of the most popular attractions at the National Maritime Museum of the Gulf, the "Take the Helm" ship simulator!

This isn't just any video game; it's a professional-grade simulator where you can actually pilot a Coast Guard patrol boat into Mobile harbor or navigate a tugboat with a barge through a lock and dam on the Tombigbee River.

After you've tested your piloting skills, step outside onto the bridge wings for some of the best views in Mobile. From this outdoor viewing area, you can watch the real working harbor in action, ships coming and going, cranes loading containers, and all the activity that makes Mobile's port so vital to the Gulf economy.

Opening September 2026: Jimmy Buffett Son of a Son of a Sailor Experience

Get ready for something special coming to the National Maritime Museum of the Gulf in September 2026! A brand new 6,000-square-foot tribute to the legendary Jimmy Buffett!

The gallery features more than 130 artifacts from Jimmy's life, along with never-before-seen footage, photos, and intimate audio including interviews and personal phone recordings. You'll get a behind-the-scenes look at the stories and moments that made Jimmy Buffett a Gulf Coast legend.

An immersive concert experience on a massive 180-degree screen that puts you right in the middle of an intimate Jimmy Buffett performance. The footage is exclusive and changeable, so return visitors might see something new each time.

Plus, keep an eye out for a waterfront statue by nationally known sculptor Ben Victor and a possible mural by local Mobile artist Gary Brady. If you're a Parrothead or just appreciate Jimmy's laid-back Gulf Coast lifestyle, this exhibit is going to be a must-see when it opens!
